A collaboration with Yehaw Indigeneous Collective, and Satpreet Kahlon, 'this was a densely wooded hill' crreated a communal grief to hold memories.
Earthwork perhaps isn’t always a manipulation of the earth, but a collaboration with it. The land is to be collaborated with for the purpose of longevity. The arching mound frame replicated the Henry’s ceiling arch in the room, and the height of the piece shares power with the windows in the room to avert attention to the outside daylight. The oyster shell floor was built to only fill the dimensions of the specific gallery and reference mounds of debris. While this piece isn’t entirely constructed of natural materials, its intentionality and focus on the outside world accomplish it as such. It is an invitation to acknowledge Indigenous efforts to tenant space that they were once removed from. Earthwork is ever-changing, and the use of pushing boundaries in art institutions catalyzes the potential for more. By collaborating as a weaver, this process highlighted how memories are stored, where they are going, and how Indigeneity carves space for stories.
